
Tony Abatemarco
Actor/Writer/Curator of Thresholds of Invention
Tony has been active in the Los Angeles theatre community for over forty years as an actor, director, writer, and producer. As well as serving as Co-Artistic Director at Skylight Theatre, he has worked at dozens of intimate theatres, L.O.R.T. houses such as South Coast Rep, the Mark Taper Forum, Kirk Douglas, Geffen Playhouse, Pasadena Playhouse, and I.C.T. Long Beach. He’s directed on Broadway and in London’s West End. His published writing includes essays in The A.S.K. Journal, High Performance, Parabasis, L.A. Times’ Counterpunch, and short fiction in Noir Mechanics, UK Boneshaker Vol 4, The Distance Project Vols 3 & 4. His four produced plays are contained in ACTION/ITEMS, The Collected Plays of Tony Abatemarco published by F-Stop Books, and his songs have been published by Ulyssés Musique, Paris. Since 1980, he has co-authored the award-winning musical BRAIN HOTEL for the Cast Theatre (LA Weekly Awards for Direction, Ensemble, Writing, & “New Directions in Theatre”) and for the LA Olympics Arts Festival ‘84, as well as SIR VIVAL SWEEPSTAKES for Jacques D’Amboise National Dance Institute on stage at the Mark Taper Forum. He is the recipient of two NEA Fellowships, for the first of which he opened The Night House DTLA (an extension of his Projects Club), and for the second he developed and directed CONFESSIONS IN TOTAL DARKNESS by Rita Valencia at LACE. With creative partner Jan Munroe, he has created NOTES: ON PERFORMANCE, Mimi Seton’s WAZO WAZO and her SEA BELOW MIDDLE SEA, as well as his own experimental musical THE NEXT BIG THING.
