Mission Statement

This has been a defining year for the Odyssey. With the loss of our legendary founder and artistic director, Ron Sossi, earlier this year, we said goodbye to a singular creative force whose impact reached far beyond our own walls and into the very heart of Los Angeles – and national – theatre. As we reflect on the past, we are energized by the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind and the thrilling responsibility of carrying it forward,

Over five decades, Ron’s pioneering vision never wavered, whether directing cutting-edge productions with the original ensemble like The Serpent and Caucasian Chalk Circle, writing and producing politically charged world premieres like The Chicago Conspiracy Trial, or delighting audiences with new works like Steven Berkoff’s long-running Kvetch.  What united his work over his long and illustrious tenure was his commitment to the writer’s vision, his love for our superbly talented community of Los Angeles theater actors, and an ever curious and rigorous approach to the art of directing.  This single-minded focus has yielded countless accolades, among them this recent acclaim from the Los Angeles Times:

“For more than a half century, the Odyssey Theatre has been a storied leader in Los Angeles’ intimate theater movement, a venue where bold vision and innovation are points of honor.”

We’re launching out 2026 season with a variety of performance experiences that demonstrate the Odyssey’s dogged commitment to aesthetically daring dynamic work that is also unfailingly intimate.
