Maya Billig
Maya Billig is a choreographer and director based in Los Angeles, California. Her work is driven by absurdity and dystopia within the intersection of dance, theatre, and film as reflections of contemporary American life. Born in Miami, Florida, she is inspired by the city’s cultural contradictions and her travels to over 35 countries, which fuel the chaos, humor, and tension embedded in her artistic lens. Maya’s work has been supported by organizations including Jacob’s Pillow, Knight Foundation, Miami Light Project, Live Arts Miami, Dance Magazine, Adrienne Arsht Center, Art Omi, and Locust Projects. She received an MFA in Choreographic Inquiry from UCLA, and a BFA in Dance from New World School of the Arts. Her dance films have been shown across various countries, taking her on a path of collaborating with filmmakers, musicians, and visual artists internationally. When living in Miami, she founded Syncopate Collective, which focuses on community-based initiatives, and her own project-based company, Billy Gee Dance Theatre.
