The Odds is an acting and technical program for high school students interested in developing and extending their theatrical skills under the guidance of theater professionals. The students are given the unique opportunity to see first hand the challenges and rewards of a life committed to theater.
The Odds will learn in workshops which will meet once a week for approximately 10 weeks culminating in a performance developed by the students. The workshops are two hours in length. The first hour is devoted to theatrical warm-ups aimed at developing and strengthening acting skills. The second hour focuses on writing and production skills. Through this second hour, students will develop one-act plays with two characters. They will then direct their own plays and be produced with professional lighting, sound, stage management and crew!
Participation in The Odds will expose students to the state standards for Theatre and Language Arts including:
- Performing Arts Theatre 1.0 Artistic Perception and Language Arts Reading 1.1.
This program has been carefully constructed to unlock ideas, feeling and reaction, and to the develop a working vocabulary that responds to production values and theatrical experiences. The study guide and teaching instructions will assist students in the documentation of their observations and perception of the production elements, such as lighting, music, style, design and theme.
- Theatre 3.0 Historical and Cultural context and Language Arts Comprehension 1.1
Students will identify and compare how film, theatre, television, and electronic media production influence our values and behaviors. The students will write and create their own monologues in a cultural context, using accurate and consistent physical mannerisms and dialect.
All workshops are held at The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in WLA. The full 10 weeks of two-hour workshops is $90. Scholarships are available. If you would like more information on how to be a part of The Odds, or would like to make a donation to support this program, please contact either Beth, Yvonne or Walter at 310-477-2055 ext. 2.

Camino Nuevo High School is a new charter School serving the community of the Westlake/McArthur Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Camino Nuevo operates two middle and two elementary schools in the same neighborhood. Students have a longer school day and year than students at traditional LAUSD schools and smaller class sizes. Our schools are very involved with parents and the community at large, including the operation of a health clinic for family members. Ninety seven percent of students at CNHS qualify for free or reduced lunch, and thirty eight percent are considered ELD. Camino Nuevo High School currently enrolls 140 freshmen, and will be adding a new class each year.
- Smaller class sizes, longer days and year. Project based learning engages students in hands on, real world activities while incorporating state standards and preparing students for exams.
- Advisory groups, where students meet with an adult from the school and discuss important issues concerning their health, community, personal lives and academic progress.
- A focus on technology actively works to bridge the digital divide our students face.
- A variety of activities including yoga, soccer, video editing, yearbook,
leadership, and others.
- We are centrally located in the downtown area, close to USC, UCLA,
Occidental, Cal State L.A. and a variety of other campuses!
