ONEONTA. This period also marked the slew of large cast award-winners, such as a RHINOCEROS, GOOD WOMAN OF SETZUAN and an entirely new version of BRECHT ON BRECHT.

OTE kicked off the new century with Ken Cavender’s massive 6-hour/two nite marathon, THE GREEKS, capturing L.A. Weekly’s PRODUCTION OF THE YEAR award and Artistic Director Ron Sossi was honored with the first ever L.A. Drama Critics’ Lifetime Achievement Award for “continued excellence in directing”. Berkoff’s SHAKESPEARE’S VILLAINS premiered prior to its hits NY and international run, and OTE’s controversial TAKING SIDES by Ron Harwood extended into a 9-month Equity run; followed by the debut og the KOAN unit with its multi-award winning FAUST PROJEKT. The L.A. debut of Julia Migenes’s DIVA ON THE VERGE returned for a second sold-out run prior to its European outing in ’05.

More Recent standouts have been the World Premier of John O’Keefe’s TIEMS LIKE THESE, the entire production later moving to San Francisco’s Traveling Jewish Theatre; a TCG Writer in Residence collaboration with O’Keefe for the World Premier of his REAPERS; KOAN’s Massive BUDDHA’S BIG NITE; Tom Szentgyorgyi’s AMONG THE THUGS; FAR AWAY by Caryl Churchill; and the World Premier’s of KOAN’s KAFKA THING; a massive multi- environmental version of THREEPENN OPERA; KOAN’s SLIDING INTO HADES and A MAN’S A MAN by Brecht. Most recently we have seen, Caryl Churchill’s A NUMBER, THE RECEPTIONIST, Pinter’s NO MANS LAND, Coward’s A SONG AT TWILIGHT, and the current THE ARSONISTS.

New works, World Premiered by the OTE, that have became staples in the American theatre have included plays by Lisa Loomer, Mark Medoff, Wally Shawn, Charlayne Woodard, Robert Coover, Suzan-Lori Parks (her first play before a W.C. audience), Gary Trudeau, Liz Swados, the many Premieres of Steven Berkoff.

Though 45+ years old, the OTE consistently strives to “keeps its edge”, to be ever mindful that the perfection of “craft” can never end, and that “just around the bend” there is always some new current of international theatre work to investigate and explore for and ever adventurous audience.
